Coinbase Commerce Shut Down: How to Keep Accepting Crypto Payments
Coinbase Commerce closed on March 31, 2026, and Coinbase's WooCommerce plugin can no longer be installed. If your store took crypto through either one, this guide covers what happened, what Coinbase offers now, and how to keep taking payments. We did it on a real WooCommerce store, with a real Bitcoin payment.
What Happened to Coinbase Commerce?
Coinbase told merchants they had to move by March 31, 2026, after which "the Commerce portal will become permanently inaccessible". On November 6, 2026, commerce.coinbase.com answered with a 502 error.
The replacement is Coinbase Business. Coinbase's notice set these terms in March 2026:
- It was "only available to businesses with a legal entity in the United States or Singapore", with more countries planned during 2026.
- You needed "a registered business entity and a business bank account".
- Everyone else was told to "transition to an alternative provider".
These quotes come from Coinbase's transition notice, which we read in the Internet Archive's copy of March 12, 2026, because the live page doesn't load for automated tools. Check the live page for the current list of countries.
What Does Coinbase Business Accept Today?
| In March 2026 | On November 6, 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| Customers can pay with | "USDC only today. USDT coming soon." | USDC on six networks, and USDT on Ethereum |
| You receive | USDC | USDC: "Funds settle to your Coinbase Business account in USDC." |
| Bitcoin | Not supported | Not on the list |
| Fee | "1% for migrating merchants" | No rate published: "To view your current fee rate, create a Payment Link" |
The November column is from Coinbase's developer docs: its migration FAQ, its changelog (the entry of October 26, 2026) and its Checkout APIs overview.
What Happened to the Coinbase Commerce WooCommerce Plugin?
It's gone, for now:
- WordPress.org says: "This plugin has been closed as of October 5, 2026 and is not available for download. This closure is temporary, pending a full review."
- WooCommerce's listing says: "This product is no longer available on WooCommerce.com."
- Search for it under Plugins → Add Plugin and Coinbase's plugin isn't there. The top result is Coinbase Business Gateway for WooCommerce, a third-party plugin by CoderPress, which needs a Coinbase Business account.
How to Keep Accepting Crypto on WooCommerce
If you can't use Coinbase Business, or you want to take Bitcoin, you can use OpenReceive: the safe way to receive bitcoin and stablecoin payments for websites and apps. It's a free, open-source plugin that runs inside your own store, and customers pay straight into your own wallet. No approval necessary.
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add Plugin and search for OpenReceive.
- Click Install Now, then Activate.
- In the sidebar, open Payments, then OpenReceive.
- Paste a receive-only NWC code from your wallet. In Rizful, that's Menu → NWC Codes → Copy receive-only code. Alby Hub works too, and so does any wallet that gives you one. This code can take payments into your wallet, but it can never spend them.
- To take stablecoins too, paste a Lightning Swap Connect code from a provider such as lightning-swap.com.
- Tick Enable, then Save changes. It checks your wallet as it saves.
The full guide is on OpenReceive's WooCommerce page.
What a Real Payment Looks Like
We placed a real $5.00 order on a test WooCommerce store on November 6, 2026, and paid it in Bitcoin over Lightning:
- At checkout, the customer picks Bitcoin & stablecoins (OpenReceive) and places the order.
- The next page offers Bitcoin, USDT, USDC, SOL and ETH. Picking Bitcoin shows a Lightning invoice, here for 6,593 sats, which any Lightning wallet can pay.
- We paid it from Alby Hub. The store showed "Payment received" right away.
- Our Rizful wallet went from 56,801 to 63,394 sats.
- In WooCommerce, the order moved to Processing.
Taking USDT and USDC
On a $21.00 order, picking USDT on Solana gave a real quote: 21.91 USDT to a deposit address. That included 0.91 USDT (4.3%) of swap and network fees, charged by the Lightning Swap Connect provider, not by OpenReceive. We stopped there and didn't pay it. Quotes change, so check yours at checkout. The same page also offers USDT on Tron and Ethereum, USDC on Solana and Ethereum, SOL and ETH.
Whatever a customer pays with, you receive Bitcoin. OpenReceive doesn't hold USDT or USDC for you, so if you want to keep stablecoins, this isn't the right tool.
Not on WooCommerce?
OpenReceive also works with Easy Digital Downloads, Laravel, Next.js and more than twenty others. If your store gets busy, Alby Hub gives you your own Lightning node, with Megalith as its channel partner.
FAQ
Is Coinbase Commerce still working?
No. Coinbase's deadline was March 31, 2026, and commerce.coinbase.com answered with a 502 error when we checked on November 6, 2026.
Can I still install the Coinbase Commerce plugin?
Not from WordPress.org: it has been closed since October 5, 2026, pending a review. WooCommerce.com has stopped listing it too.
Does Coinbase Business accept Bitcoin?
Bitcoin isn't on the list in Coinbase's developer docs. Customers can pay with USDC or with USDT on Ethereum, and funds settle in USDC.
Does OpenReceive charge a fee?
The plugin is free. A stablecoin payment goes through a Lightning Swap Connect provider, and that provider charges its own fee, which the customer sees in the quote.
